Abstract

I shall give a brief introduction of the concept of infectious disease and its causative agents. The mode of transmission of infectious diseases in general, and respiratory diseases in particular will be explained. The relationship between agent, host and the environment is a good conceptual framework in infectious disease prevention and control. The principle of infectious disease prevention and control is to break the chain of disease transmission at its weakest link. For Covid-19, this principle can be exemplified by: personal hygiene, social distancing, vaccination and other behavioural activities. Finally, an outlook for the future is presented.
